Hikvision NVR, DVR and camera via IPv6

In this post, let’s talk about how you can access a Hikvision recorder, DVR or camera via IPv6.

The IPv6, or Internet Protocol version 6, is the most recent version of IP (Internet Protocol) but the first widely developed version. Developed by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), the IPv6 was made to aid anticipated exhaustion problems of the IPv4 address.

In the steps below, we will be accessing a Hikvision recorder (NVR/DVR) through a web browser, particularly Internet Explorer, and utilizing the iVMS-4200, which is a camera management software.

Prior to gaining access, you will need the latest iVMS-4200 version installed. You should also ensure that the IPv6 and the Hikvision recorder are available in the same network as your computer.

Note that the IPv6 address of your recorder is unalterable.

Access a Hikvision recorder via IPv6 through Web Browser.

To begin, you will need to find the IPv6 address of your Hikvision NVR/DVR straight from the recorder. To do so, go to Configuration and then Network Settings. You could also find it in the SADP tool.

Once you have the IPv6, type it into the URL address bar of a web browser.

See a real example below where I have access to my Hikvision NVR using the IPV6 IP address:

The previous example is for a web browser, but you can also use software such as i-VMS-4500 or Hik-connect.

Here’s an example of the Hikvision camera on the Hik-connect for End User.

As you can see, the configuration address is an IPV6 address.

After finding the IPv6 address of the Hikvision recorder through the device or via SADP, launch the iVMS-4200 software.

Once open, select Add device and enter the address, your username and password, and the port into the software.

As you can see in the following picture, the IPV6 address is used for the configuration.

And here we have the live video stream from a Hikvision NVR using the IPV6 protocol. Cool, huh?
