Advantages
—————-
- helps detect & report crime
- helps solve crime
- helps to deter opportunistic crime
- can let you view your business from a remote location, help your employees or make sure they are doing job
- can measure things like traffic, pedestrians, environment, animals to make things better or change how things are done to improve efficiency
- helps insecure people feel safe
- protect entry to buildings and open spaces
- track criminals
Disadvantages
———————
- can invade privacy
- create a nanny state where people are watched and told what to do
- images can be used for bad purposes like the image of me falling over ending up on YouTube
- we dont always know what happens to reorded images
Conclusion
—————
CCTV cameras everywhere can be an advantage helping us live in a safer and more managed environment for our benefit. In recent times CCTV has been in the headlines weekly where it has been used to track and charge terrorists and football thugs. I would say it helps in many ways.
The only thing we need to be careful of is how recorded images are used and they are not used for sinister purposes by those who control or hold images. Some recent news stories have covered pervert CCTV operators getting caught looking into womens bedrooms, as long as we are protected from these problems then CCTV is a definate advantage.
