IDK whats with all these religious nuts saying what a merical this was, as the fact is that no matter how unlikely this event was, the crew had training (not saying it was easy though) it did infact take skill on the pilots part but everybody did there job. the pilot was not the only one who made this a succes. The EMS crew responded emidiatly and the faries made shure it stayed afloat when they opend the door.

Sully said they hit the water at around 150 mph. But you are right that the landing had to be perfect to avoid jacknife or cartwheel.

Wrong answer! He intervenes (when he deems fit that it isn’t a person’s time to go) and he also sends tests our way from time to time. All the while NOT taking the actions of our free will away from us. People who don’t “believe-in/know anything about” God shouldn’t pretend to instruct others! It’s a MOST serious matter!

Lets say, with a little luck it works well on water, but in general a field will be much better choice. On most planes the engines stick out below the plane, so they will be the first to hit the water and catch all the energy… And theres a great chance the plane will pull over to one side, even if it touches down perfectly leveled…There was another crash on water, i dont remember where/when, but those passengeres werent quite so lucky.

apparently he’s an ex raf pilot, we got a lecture in the UK saying that if he was to land slightly less horizontally his wing tips would have caused the plane to jacknife as they hit the water, at about 200 mph, the plane stopping so quickly would have broken people’s necks etc…wel, done mr pilot!

HOWEVER the hudson where he landed is four times longer than runway 27 at Heathrow hence a doddle landing.the Airbus is even fitted with sealable doors so it floats longer.A well trained and brilliantly executed move by the pilot. But had he been a few miles past the hudson then CNN would reporting different headlines of a fatal plane crash into a field where the injuries occured on the impact of a hill , woods or buildings!!! any reply?

Ditching in water is a practiced training technique,a Feild near a city airport may contain one of many things 1.Power lines 2.Roads and motorways 3.houses next to the feilds(yes we r close to a city airport and not in desert!) 4. Tesco ,finally 5.some cows.

Just remember, there is a lot of air in an airplane because everything is hollow. The wings, the fuselage, the tail, everything is full of air and has a good seal for cabin pressurization. The plane will float for a short time as long as it holds together (as in this case..) As the air escapes, the plane sinks. Opening the rear escape door had the fastest effect on this plane’s sinking because the rear was already submerged.

no, Ive heard that the back door was jammed and that it was blessing in disguise because if they were able to open it the plane would of sunk.
